Tillandsia usneoides, also known as "Louisiana moss" or "Spanish Moss", is an unusual, hanging-growing species of Tillandsia with a very wide distribution – from the southern USA to Argentina.
The name "usneoides" means "resembling lichen" and refers to its external similarity to the beard lichen (Usnea). It was first described by Carl von Linné in 1762. This variety forms extremely rough, silvery-white, hanging shoots with delicate leaves and dense hair. It is overall more compact and lighter than the standard form, giving it a particularly elegant appearance. The shoots can grow several meters long. Flowers appear only rarely – they are small, greenish-yellow, and mostly scentless.

Characteristics:

This epiphytic Tillandsia does not have a classic rosette shape but instead forms long, freely hanging shoots with narrow, gray-silvery leaves that sit in pairs along the thin stems. The plant grows steadily in long strands and can reach several meters in length. It rarely blooms and is inconspicuous with small greenish-yellow flowers, fragrant in certain varieties. Due to its high trichome density, it is perfectly adapted to dry air.

Care instructions:

Light: Bright to semi-shaded, no direct midday sun.
Water: Spray thoroughly 2–4 times a week with rainwater or soft water. In very dry air, also daily. Always allow to dry out well.
Humidity: High (60%+), spray significantly more often in low humidity. Very good airflow is required.
Fertilizer: In spring and summer, 1–2 times a month with our special Tillandsia or orchid fertilizer in diluted form.
Temperature: 16–30 °C, briefly down to about 5 °C frost-free.

Note: Tillandsia usneoides is ideal for hanging installations, branches or for draping over objects. It is easy to care for but requires consistent airflow and regular watering. It looks particularly attractive in airy groups or as a natural curtain in warm, bright rooms.

Our greenhouses are equipped with modern energy screens and double glazing to efficiently save on heating costs. Additionally, we collect rainwater over the entire roof area of 9,000 square meters and use only this water to irrigate all our crops. We collect the rainwater in underground tanks with a total volume of 600,000 liters.

Since 2007, we have been heating our entire operation with a fully automated 850 kW wood chip heating system and a 100,000-liter buffer storage tank. Environmentally friendly and CO2-neutral. Only to support during very cold winter days and nights is a conventional oil heating system available.

Since 2014, the heating has been supported by a solar thermal system with an annual yield of about 20 megawatt-hours.

In 2020, we installed a photovoltaic system with 30 kW peak and have been producing more green electricity per year than our entire operation requires.

Since 2021, we use exclusively pots for our self-produced plants that are not only 100% recyclable but are also entirely made from recycled pots. To this end, we collect all used pots that arise in our operation and have them picked up in big bags by our pot supplier Göttinger. There, the pots are cleaned and processed in a water-free recycling facility into new pots that come back to us.
